SMALL TOWN STRANGER

I AM A FISHFLY ON THE WALL OBSERVING DUBUQUERS IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT

Dubuque Initiation Ceremony April 7, 2008

I attended a Dubuque themed party thrown by one of my co-workers last Saturday. “What does a Dubuque themed party consist of?” one might ask. First, there are Turkey and Dressing Sandwiches. These sandwiches contain shreds of turkey, turkey juice, and lots of stuffing between a bun. I’ve only seen these here. CE, a native Dubuquer who was sitting next to me and who is a vegetarian, leaned over while we were eating and said “Nobody actually likes them. We just pretend.” So, I smiled as I bit into my bread sandwich and chased it all with a swig of PBR.

Then I learned to play Euchre, which is extremely popular and confusing.

So it’s official, I’m a Dubuquer who plays Euchre. My life is complete!

good lord–just the thought of those sandwiches makes me…i don’t know what, but it’s bad.

the annual ENGL banquet is coming up. do you have fond memories of them?

if you’re looking for something to do, there’s a great show this Friday at Maya Jane’s (formerly Chalky’s)….

hey ashley! what’s going on with you? it’s great to see you’ve joined the blogging world.

we’re probably moving around mid-July. any visitors passing through montana are welcome to crash with us.

are you in iowa for the long-term? or perhaps moving (away from those sandwiches)?

    Hooray! Ashley’s in the blogosphere!

I definitely misspent many long summer nights drinking beer and playing Euchre when I was a grad student in Bloomington. But it’s hard to top being able to say that you’re a Dubuquer who plays Euchre.

I happen to like T&D sandwiches. That juicy turkey meat with a little of Mom’s moist dressing – YUM!
